What is BS EN 55032:2015+A1:2020 about?

This European standard specifies emission requirements for multimedia equipment (MME) – mainly domestic electrical equipment such as personal computers, TVs and games consoles as well as professional audio and studio equipment – so that it doesn’t interfere with radio services. This 2020 amendment updates the standard in line with new and changing technologies, new test methods and issues identified by users in the 2015 version.

Who is BS EN 55032:2015+A1:2020 for?

  • Suppliers of IT or multimedia equipment
  • IT and telecommunications product/equipment designers
  • Telecommunications network operators
  • EMC test laboratories
  • Regulatory bodies
  • Installers, manufacturers, importers and systems integrators of: computers, laptops, tablets, displays, printers, storage devices, TVs, radios, hi-fi, telecommunication equipment, MP3 players, GPS receivers, professional audio/video systems (studio/theatre/cinema/stadium), digital cameras and camcorders, electronic musical instruments (synthesizers), and gaming machines from handheld and video game consoles to full-size arcade games

Why should you use BS EN 55032:2015+A1:2020?

The standard covers emission requirements of multimedia equipment (MME). It establishes what will allow radio services to operate as intended in the frequency range 9 kHz to 400 GHz. It also specifies procedures to ensure the reproducibility of measurement and the repeatability of results.

The benefits of this amendment are that it introduces new methods and is clearer on how the standard should be applied. A better understanding of the requirements will lead to improved repeatability between test facilities and greater protection of mobile receivers.

NOTE: As of December 2020, this amended version is not harmonized with the essential requirements of Directive 2014/30/EU (the latest EMC Directive). There will be another amendment published in 6-9 months’ time that will harmonize this amendment. Until then, manufacturers seeking compliance with 2014/30/EU must use another means of conformity to demonstrate compliance.

BS EN 55032:2015+A1:2020 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on building resilient infrastructure because it supports the operation of radio reception as intended.

What’s new about BS EN 55032:2015+A1:2020?

This amendment to BS EN 55032:2015 tackles a significant number of areas within the standard in order to reflect new and changing technologies, new test methods, and issues identified by users. In particular, this amendment:

a)       Makes changes to the limits

b)      Makes changes to the application of measurement uncertainty

Makes editorial improvements, including an update to references and test methods (e.g. clarifications and changes to existing test methods and new alternatives)
