Why should you use this standard?
Because it aims to protect people and the surroundings of the apparatus. Specifically, its application is intended to prevent injury or damage from:
- Electric shock
- Excessive temperatures
- Radiation
- Implosion
- Mechanical hazards
- Fire
- Chemical burns (for example as a result of the ingestion of lithium chemistry button/coin cells)
Note that protection for “the surroundings of the apparatus” also implies protection of the natural environment in which the apparatus is used, taking into account the life cycle of the apparatus, i.e. manufacturing, use, maintenance, disposal and possible end-of-life recycling of parts of the apparatus.
